The transition to a sustainable chemical industry is an urgent and complex challenge — one that requires leadership, vision, and long-term commitment, not only from governments but also from the industry itself.

The draft National Vision for Sustainable Carbon Use sets a promising direction, yet accelerating its implementation is critical. Government must establish the right framework conditions: adequate access to renewable energy and, especially at the European level, active policies that stimulate market demand for sustainable chemical products. Without a structural demand, even the most innovative solutions will fail to gain traction.

At the same time, the sector cannot afford to wait. The chemical industry must take the lead with pilot and demonstration projects that show what is technically feasible and economically viable. Collaboration with circular value chain partners is essential. Practical, real-world examples are needed to drive systemic change. A clear long-term strategy is indispensable. The shift to circular and more sustainable carbon requires new chemistry — chemistry that must be further developed and scaled up. This calls for timely, targeted investments by both governments and companies in technology development, in close cooperation with knowledge partners, to secure the future of the industry.

This contribution, from Brightsite, outlines the building blocks for the chemical industry of tomorrow. We hope it will strengthen the shared commitment of industry, government, and knowledge institutions — each in their own role, yet united in their efforts to realise this essential transformation. For a sustainable future of Chemelot, our region, and generations to come.
