Process and site innovation

The program line Process innovation within Brightsite focusses on:

  • In-process and post-process emission reduction
  • In-process and post-process energy reduction
  • Digitalization
  • Circular water

The production of heat and greenhouse gasses is inherent to chemicals production, even for the most sophisticated processes. The first challenge is to reduce the production of heat and greenhouse gasses by alternative production processes.

To achieve the 2030 and 2050 goals, the program line Process innovation aims at the reduction of greenhouse gasses by the capture, storage or utilization of CO₂ and the elimination of N₂O emissions. The program line focusses on the efficient reuse of residual heat. The main challenge here is the development and implementation of industrial heat pumps to boost the temperature for re-use or industry. The opportunities of digitalization are used to increase process efficiency and avoid emissions. Apart from emissions to air the program will also take care of emissions to water and water losses due to evaporation.

Reuse of residual heat or to heat houses and offices

The future outlook is that thanks to digitalization emissions are minimized. Remaining greenhouse gasses are captured and reused effectively in 2050. The use of green CO₂ combined with reuse even leads to negative emissions. Chemelot reuses residual heat from the plants or the heat is transported to heat houses and offices outside the industrial area. And this is all taking place on a site that will not take water from or discharge water to the river Meuse.
