Dave Beijer Enthusiastically Starts as Interim Program Director at Brightsite

News

As of 1 September 2025, Dave Beijer has taken on the role of Interim Program Director at Brightsite. He will fulfill this position for a period of one year, in combination with his role as Managing Director of CHILL. “I look forward to working with the Brightsite team and taking the Brightsite program to the next level.”

Beijer has a background in Marketing & Communication, Human Resources, and organizational development, has extensive leadership experience, and is well-acquainted with both Chemelot and the region. He has been Managing Director of CHILL since the summer of 2023 and previously spent eight years at Fibrant as Director People & Culture.

“My career started in marketing and communications, and I worked in recruitment before moving into HR at DSM in 2008. Over the years, I’ve come to know Chemelot and Brightlands Chemelot Campus (BCC) very well. Talent development has been the common thread throughout my career, and that aligns perfectly with Brightsite’s mission,” says Beijer.

Strategic Analysis
“I’m honored to have been asked and excited to get started at Brightsite. My role as Program Director aligns well with my responsibilities at CHILL, making it a logical and practical combination. Both Brightsite and CHILL have a long-term perspective and a strong focus on the human factor, so I step into this role with great confidence. I want to use my experience in both the private sector and public-private partnerships to help develop strategic routes that serve both the scientific community and industrial stakeholders.”

During this interim year, Beijer will focus primarily on conducting a strategic analysis of the current Brightsite program, in close collaboration with Brightsite’s partners — Sitech, TNO, Maastricht University (UM) and Brightlands Chemelot Campus (BCC) — and the companies at Chemelot.

“The program’s scientific content remains the responsibility of the program leaders. My task is to strengthen and streamline the structure around it,” he explains.

Breaking Down Barriers and Optimizing Collaboration
“From the outside, it’s not always clear who is responsible for what or which knowledge center to approach for specific topics. The ‘fence’ around the campus can feel quite high — and I want to lower it. How can we create more clarity in this landscape of knowledge centers? That’s one of the key questions I’ll address.”

This requires further optimization of collaboration between the different knowledge centers.

“There’s currently a degree of overlap. It will be interesting to see where more efficient collaboration is possible — or even whether merging certain activities could be an option. Take Human Resources as an example: Brightsite focuses on educating the engineers of the future who will drive the transition to sustainable chemistry — and on retaining this talent for the region. That’s also a core focus at CHILL, so there may be room to bring our efforts closer together. And this is just one example; there are more areas where overlap exists. Of course, this is both exciting and challenging,” Beijer acknowledges.

Industry Alignment Is Crucial
Like CHILL, Brightsite is a public-private partnership, involving many stakeholders and complex dynamics.

“I’m used to working in such environments, and I embrace the challenge. It’s clear that the chemical transition can only happen if companies innovate — and that’s precisely where the challenge lies. Strengthening the link between Brightsite’s programs and business needs is crucial. Brightsite outlines the future vision for sustainable chemistry, but we must make sure not to lose touch with industry. Speaking the language of business is essential.”

“Arnold Stokking has mapped out this future vision and knows what needs to be done. I’m very pleased that Arnold will remain involved as an advisor and that I can continue to spar with him. That’s extremely valuable and will only help me in this role,” Beijer adds.

Creating Shared Impact
Beijer will reduce his time at CHILL to three days per week, dedicating two days a week to Brightsite.

“CHILL is in a strong position, so the bigger challenge might be for me personally to let go of certain things. But I have full confidence that I can combine both roles, and I’m excited to take on this complex assignment.”

“By the end of my interim period, I hope we’ll have achieved a clear and well-positioned branding and structure for the various knowledge centers at BCC, ensuring that Brightsite’s highly valuable programs are well integrated. How exactly this will take shape is still open, but what matters most is securing innovation and the position of chemistry in the Netherlands. By connecting, we can achieve shared and sustainable long-term impact,” Beijer concludes.

About Dave Beijer
Dave lives in Belgium. “Sports help me clear my head and stay sharp — and I also teach fitness classes. I strongly believe in vitality: people function best when they feel good. On Sundays, I work in the restaurant I run together with my husband. It’s something completely different from my daily work, but it’s incredibly rewarding to see people leave with a smile,” Beijer shares.
