Plasma Day 18 November 2021

Event

On 18 November 2021 Brightlands Chemelot Campus, Maastricht University, Brightsite and VoltaChem organized an entire day dedicated to plasma technology: Plasma Day. The Shared Innovation Program VoltaChem hosted an online talk show about applications of plasma in industry. The Brightlands Chemelot Campus science community a Science Lecture with leading scientists, who provided a broader scientific perspective on fusion energy and the energy transition, including the breakthroughs and current challenges in plasma physics. The highlight of the day was the official opening of the Brightsite Plasmalab. For an impression of this day, see the pictures below.

Official opening Brightsite Plasmalab

Today marked the opening of the Brightsite Plasmalab at Brightlands Chemelot Campus. In this promising lab, plasma technology and processes will be optimized and developed. Making it possible to electrify chemical processes using (green) electricity and to produce hydrogen and raw materials for the chemical industry without releasing any CO₂.

The opening of the Brightsite Plasmalab is a major step toward sustainable, efficient industrial applications for plasma technology within the chemical industry. We can’t wait to get started in the new lab. The huge amount of interest in our new plasmalab, both from industry and academia, is a testament to the opportunities provided by electrification and recognition of our specific plasma route as a promising direction for the greening of chemistry. Plasma technology is our gamechanger. We are ready for circular chemistry.

Brightlands Science Lecture with Professor Cardozo

The Science Community of Brightlands Chemelot Campus organized a lecture with Niek Lopes Cardozo, professor Science and Technology of Nuclear Fusion at Eindhoven University of Technology. Theme: Nuclear fusion energy, driver of innovation – innovation, driver of fusion energy. Leading scientists such as Professor Ron Heeren, Professor Gerard van Rooij and Professor Niek Lopes Cardozo outlined a broader scientific perspective on fusion energy and the energy transition, including the breakthroughs and current challenges of plasma physics.

VoltaChem Power-2-X Tour 2021 #4: Plasma as a game changer for the chemical industry

The Shared Innovation Program VoltaChem hosted an online talk show with the industry on plasma technology as an upcoming Power-2-X  technology. This was the fourth edition of the VoltaChem Power-2-X Tour. The topic of this edition: ‘Plasma technology as a game changer for the chemical industry’. Can electricity-powered plasma technology become a game changer in high-value chemicals production? This was one of the questions that experts from industry and academia, including Jeff Mason (Transform Materials), Hans Linden (Brightsite/TNO), and Leon Jacobs (SABIC) explored during the talk show. They also discussed topics like the current state of plasma technology, expected developments, opportunities for application in the industry, the associated business case, and much more.
