Koos van Haasteren started as Executive Director of Chemelot at the end of 2024. His vision for Chemelot is to take further steps towards a sustainable future by strengthening the collaboration between Chemelot, its companies, and other partners. In this interview, Van Haasteren shares his outlook on the future of Chemelot and the role Brightsite can play in this transformation.

Koos van Haasteren is no stranger to Chemelot. He began his career in the industry in August 1987 at Chemelot and has held various positions within the sector. In mid-October, he transitioned from his role as Chairman of the Supervisory Board at Brightlands Chemelot Campus to his new role as Executive Director of Chemelot.

You have now been Executive Director of Chemelot for a few months. What are your plans for Chemelot?

“It feels great to be back at Chemelot, and I am eager to shape our strategy towards a sustainable future. Chemelot is a unique ecosystem where industry and innovation come together in a special symbiosis. This involves innovations at all TRL levels (Technology Readiness Levels)—innovations that can strengthen each other and add value to society. Exciting years lie ahead as we navigate the transition. We have already made significant progress in CO₂ reduction, and we aim to remain a frontrunner. However, there are still major challenges ahead—for example, a 25% reduction over the next eight years—to ultimately achieve a circular, sustainable, and fully climate-neutral Chemelot by 2050. This involves a wide range of efforts, from energy reduction to integrating (new) circular processes. I am optimistic that we will accomplish this together. It is a privilege to play a role in Chemelot’s transition.”

What role can Brightsite play in Chemelot’s transition?

“Brightsite is an essential part of the Chemelot Sustainability Team and thus contributes to Chemelot’s strategy. Brightsite bridges the gap between innovative technology and commercial application. Thanks to Brightsite’s efforts, our knowledge of the latest developments, opportunities, and challenges in sustainability is up to date. This enables us to respond to various situations and scenarios. What we are doing here at Chemelot has never been done anywhere else in the world: investing so heavily in circularity in such a short time. We need around 7-10 billion euros, including investments in infrastructure focused on direct current or wind power. Currently, 66% of the power used on-site is already green. To take the necessary major steps, we must stay close as stakeholders and maintain good communication with our surroundings—Brightsite can play a vital role here. I am also proud of the Brightsite Plasmalab and look forward to the next step towards commercialization. It’s remarkable how this ‘old technology’ has so much potential today thanks to modern upgrades. With this advanced plasma technology, we can produce emission-free hydrogen and acetylene from methane—a highly valuable conversion.”
