Digital Transition

– Data-Driven Chemical Industry

Digitalisation is essential to achieving the sustainability goals for 2030 and 2050. This is acknowledged by the European Union in the so-called twin transition: the green and digital transition. Digital technologies contribute by making processes more efficient and safer, enabling better alignment of material and energy flows between plants at Chemelot, and ultimately supporting the shift from time-based to data-driven production and maintenance. Brightsite has developed a clear vision of the digital factory/site of the future to support this transformation.

Within the core program of the Digital Transition – titled Digital Factory of the Future – Brightsite focuses on the development of digital twins based on an open standard: the Asset Administration Shell. Digital twins are digital representations of physical objects or systems, and the use of an open standard ensures seamless integration and communication between various digital and physical entities. This also allows for a scalable solution. The digital factory of the future depends on a structured and accessible data architecture.

Secure information exchange within the value chain is crucial for the chemical industry to remain innovative and competitive. Within the growth area ‘Digital Site Transition’, multiple projects focus on enabling secure data exchange between partners in the value chain. This is anchored in a data space for the process industry, aligned with the EU’s Gaia-X initiative. Selected use cases from the core program will be embedded within this data space. Using this framework, we aim to define precisely who can access what data, for what purpose, and for how long. The data space enables a transparent, secure, and standardised method of information sharing—while keeping the data owner in control. It is essential that Chemelot site-users remain independent of asset supplier ecosystems or cloud solutions from major tech providers.
